Tile patterns affect the building cost so we always think about the best tiling patterns that is low cost and beautiful.
YOU CAN GET ONLY 2 PIECES OUT OF ONE WHOLE TILE
Normal you can get only up to 2 pieces out of a whole tile if you need smaller pieces than the original size.
The reason is that you can only use the edge side of an original tile because the cut edges are not smooth and beautiful.
This means that the more you need to cut tiles the more amount of tiles you have to throw away therefore the more you have to pay the tile cost.
So the point is to reduce the amount of cuts as much as possible.

Here is an example of a bathroom tile pattern.
You see lots of small pieces on both sides so you expect that there will be some wastes of tiles.
Also a tiler takes time to cut and place these small pieces so you may have to pay more for his labour.
Here is a different pattern in the same bathroom
Now there are less cuts so it will be cheaper and easier for a tiler to cut and place.
He still needs to cut some pieces but these are bigger than the previous example so easier to handle.
Also the tile pattern looks neat and beautiful.

原因是因為原來那塊你四個角都沒切過，但是切出來的四個角就有可能因為施工原因導致不平滑/不美觀
這就說了如果要把瓷磚切出很多片的話，也等於要用更多的量
所以我們儘量減少需要切的量
